At Westende Junior School, we believe that having a strong understanding of mathematical concepts is fundamental to future success. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically and curiosity about the subject.  Using a Maths Mastery approach and following the National Curriculum, we aim to ensure that all children ​become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately; ​reason mathematically, often using oracy skills to express their ideas; and solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication. There is a sense of excitement about mathematics at Westende, which is promoted by one of our pupil groups – the Maths Ambassadors.
