Creative Curriculum

 

Curriculum enrichment for DT, Art, History, Geography and music at home.

 

  • Visit an art gallery or museum which supports the school theme or an interest your child has – for example, when Year 5 do Britain through the wars, The Imperial War Museum is a great option! The Tate Modern brings up a great deal of art discussion around what makes art art.

 

  • Cook at home with your child or allow them to use your kitchen and recipe books. Ask them to adapt recipes for more or less people etc. Ensure they do the tidying up too.

 

  • Go walking/hiking and give your child the map – get them to direct the family and explain what any features you pass look like on the map. Look at the walk on the amp before you go and see if the contour lines give you any hints to hills that have to be ascended or descended.

 

  • Build dens in the wood – this can lead on to discussions around conservation of the woods/trees, types of trees and their uses, land types and what grows best where.

 

  • Listen to a range of music – get all your old CDs/tapes(!)/records out and play them during family meals. Discuss how music has changed over the years and see if the child can offer reasons why.

 

  • Furthermore, there is a whole series of “My First…” albums, that introduce children to the most famous classic composers, such as Beethoven. Get your child to move to the music – this encourages a sense of rhythm and tempo.

 

  • Be creative with all the packaging you receive – allow your child to make camps, models…whatever, out of it all. How creative can they be?

 

  • Put a large range of material on your bookshelves – include magazines, annuals, picture books…all around what your child enjoys

 

  • There are loads and loads of different ideas on Pinterest for art projects around most themes, including some super ideas for the Rainforest Year 4 theme and some STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) learning projects for the Year 3 Ancient Greek theme.

 

  • At home, look at the countries your ancestors have come from. Use maps, globes and google maps to investigate what the country is like (it’s climate, vegetation, flora and fauna, buildings, rivers, mountains, people etc), make and eat food from that country for a week or a few days, experimenting with their traditional cooking methods. Try speaking a few words in the language of the country. Again, there are loads of other ideas on Pinterest.

 

  • Encourage (yes, encourage) your child to make noise! Use pots, pans, shaking tins, whatever, to see if they can make a rhythm or keep in time with music that is already being played.
